Burlington's mix of older mill-town streets and newer Alamance County subdivisions means your driveway sits on very different ground depending on which neighborhood you're in, and that ground is almost always red clay that moves with the seasons.
When your driveway heaves, settles, cracks, or water starts running toward your garage or foundation, you need someone who understands why that happens here and how to fix it right. Durham Asphalt Paving has served Burlington and the surrounding area since 2009, and we know exactly what the Piedmont clay does to asphalt that wasn't built on a solid, properly compacted base.
Asphalt Paving in Burlington (27201)
Burlington sits at the intersection of two very different kinds of development. The older mill-village neighborhoods near downtown run narrow lots with irregular grades, driveways that curve down to garages set below street level, and housing stock from the early 1900s onward. The newer ring of subdivisions spreads across Alamance County with straight-cut lots and driveway aprons built right out of raw red clay. Both face the same core problem: Piedmont subgrade that swells when wet, contracts when dry, and softens through a long wet spell if the base underneath was never properly compacted.
A driveway that heaves, settles, or cracks is almost always telling you the ground moved under it. Winter freeze-thaw cycles in Burlington are mild (only a couple of dozen crossings a year, with about 12 inches of frost depth), so it is not deep cold that tears these driveways apart. It is the clay and the water sitting in it, plus hot humid summers that soften asphalt laid too thin. The answer is hot mix asphalt set on a compacted aggregate base and pitched to move water off the surface, which is what we build with.
Our team has been doing this work in Burlington and the Durham area for fifteen years. We know the lot layouts, the soil conditions, and the drainage challenges that come with this part of North Carolina.

How a Job Works in Burlington
We start with a free on-site assessment. We look at what is failing, why it is failing, and what the ground underneath tells us. We measure the area, check the drainage and grade, and talk through your options. If your driveway is settling or cracking because the base was never compacted, patching will not hold. If the surface is worn but the base is sound, resurfacing makes sense. We explain the difference and give you a written estimate with thickness and tonnage specs so you know exactly what you are paying for.
When we start work, we handle the site setup, bring in the equipment and crew, and do the job right. In Burlington's older neighborhoods, that often means working in tight spaces where a standard paver and roller have to move carefully. In the newer subdivisions, we may need to coordinate with your HOA or work around utility lines. We always call for a North Carolina 811 utility locate before we dig, because the law requires it and because hitting a line is nobody's problem but ours to prevent.
When we finish, we leave your property clean. We haul away the old material, sweep up the edges, and walk through the job with you so you know what you have and how to care for it. New asphalt needs six to twelve months to cure fully, so we tell you not to seal it during that time, even though you might see offers to do so. Let it cure first.
Driveway paving in Burlington typically starts around $6 per square foot, but that is a floor, not a promise. A small residential driveway runs anywhere from $2,000 to $6,000 depending on size, access, and base condition. Resurfacing (overlay) starts around $4 per square foot. Repair work (pothole patching, edge work, small broken sections) starts at $450. A full driveway replacement, where the old asphalt comes out and new base and surface go in, runs $7 per square foot and up. Parking lot work and private road paving are quoted on site because they vary so much in scope. The real cost drivers are square footage, how tight the access is for our equipment, whether the base is solid or needs rework, and how thick we need to build it to handle what you are putting on it.
