Raleigh's driveways fail for one reason above all others: red clay subgrade that swells when wet and softens through a long rainy stretch, then heaves and cracks as it dries out again. Your driveway was probably built on that clay, and if the base wasn't compacted properly, you're watching it move under your feet.
Durham Asphalt Paving has been serving Raleigh and the surrounding Durham area since 2009. We know exactly what Piedmont soil does to a driveway, and we know how to build one that stays flat. Whether you need a patch, a fresh surface, or a full replacement, we'll tell you honestly what your driveway actually needs and price it fairly. Asphalt Paving in Raleigh (27609)
Raleigh's housing stock ranges from in-town bungalows on tight lots with driveways pitched to garages set below street level, to sprawling post-war ranch neighborhoods, to new subdivisions where every driveway was cut straight out of raw red clay. That clay is the real problem. It's dense, iron-rich Piedmont soil that swells when wet and contracts when dry. A driveway built on a subgrade that was never properly compacted will heave, settle, and crack as the ground moves under it. Winters here are mild, with only a couple dozen freeze-thaw cycles a year, so it isn't deep cold that tears these driveways apart. It's the clay and the water sitting in it, plus hot humid summers that soften asphalt laid too thin.
We build driveways the right way: hot mix asphalt, set on a compacted aggregate base and pitched to move water off the surface. That's what this market actually needs. Since 2009, we've repaired, resurfaced, and replaced hundreds of driveways across Raleigh and the Durham area. We understand the lot layouts here, the grade challenges, the drainage issues, and the local permitting. Our crews are fully insured for general liability and workers' compensation, and we provide written estimates with tonnage specifications so you know exactly what you're paying for.

How a Job Works in Raleigh
We start with a free on-site visit. We'll measure your driveway, look at the base, check the grade and drainage, and explain what's happening. If you have an HOA or if your property touches a utility line, we'll talk through the local rules and permit requirements. You'll get a written estimate with tonnage specs so there's no guessing.
When we start the work, we show up with the right equipment for your lot. If you're in a tight neighborhood lot with a garage set below street level, we know how to manage access and grade. If you're in a newer subdivision, we handle the clay subgrade and base compaction properly so the driveway doesn't heave. We mill out the old surface if needed, prep and compact the base, and lay new hot mix asphalt at the thickness your driveway requires. We proof roll the surface and make sure water runs away from your foundation and garage.
When we're done, we haul away the debris and leave your property clean. We'll walk through the job with you and answer any questions about maintenance and care.
Driveway paving in Raleigh typically runs from $6 per square foot for new installation, depending on lot size, access, base condition, and the thickness we need to build for your soil. Resurfacing an existing driveway costs less, starting around $4 per square foot. Repair work, like patching or fixing a pothole, starts at $450. A full driveway replacement runs from $7 per square foot. Parking lot paving starts with a free commercial estimate. The real cost factors are the square footage, how we need to access your lot, whether the base is solid or needs rebuilding, and the thickness the asphalt needs to be. We'll give you a firm price after we've looked at the site. Call (984) 257-4541 to schedule your free estimate.
